History of The Studio

The Studio is based on findings from thesis research by Founder + CEO, Chantal Abouchar, completed in 2014. “Inventing the Future: Accelerator Programs and the Screen Industry”, drew on Time Warners’ accelerator program a key case study.

Established in November 2015, The Studio’s community grew through its meetup group, holding monthly events based on topics + themes focused on technology, business + creativity. This community is now over 10,000 strong + growing.

In 2017, The Studio raised $450,000 from its foundation partners (plus millions in-kind) received co-investment from the Federal Government through the Incubator Support Fund + was successful through a competitive tender process to be an anchor tenant in the new Sydney Startup Hub would open in 2018.

Bringing The Studio to life, from research to reality, involved a de-fit + fit-out of The Studio’s new home. The success of The Studio is the curation of a community of high growth startups where knowledge sharing is key.

The Studio, an anchor tenant of The Sydney Startup hub was officially opened by Scott Morrison in July, 2018

The Studio is also a founding member of the Sydney Culture Network.

Why Media Technologies?
In an increasingly global world, global comparative advantage is becoming increasingly important. Many of Australia’s fastest growing and most successful companies are in media (content) and communications technologies:

• Campaign Monitor, one of the world’s leading online newsletter services used by Apple and many other leading global brands - attracted the largest private investment of any tech company in Australia
• Canva, the global graphic design unicorn playing in a $100Bn marketplace
• Appen, who are providing advanced voice and speech technology services to the world’s leading tech companies such as Amazon, Google, Apple and others
• Envato, a subscription service that provides you with access to over 900,000 downloadable digital assets for your projects
• 99 Designs, a freelancer platform for connecting graphic designers and clients.
These companies are built on decades of leadership and innovation from Australian media enterprises such as News Corp, Nine and Fairfax as well as the pioneering communications technology firms such as Fairlight synthesisers and Blackmagic Design; Google Maps and RØDE Microphones.
